Weavings
The craft of spider
and the loom
silk, gold, a ray of sun,
cloths that decorate and blow,
flags of beauty in the wind,
lacey finery designed to trap,
conceal the arts
of nature’s threads:
a blanket wrapped protects
from cold, a net emboldens
predators in holes,
colors imitate rainbows,
flowers, and shining hair;
warm light ripples and displays
flowing fashions in rushing streams
that pause to admire their gowns
reflected in still lakes;
a scarf brings out the blush
of cheeks, the sparkle
in the eyes, fine fabric accents
breasts, hips, thighs,
clothing spins myths,
complicates relationships,
words that stir imagination
and create hallucination;
a cape for the magician
to hide the illusion;
a shroud for the dead
to erase the unknown dread,
a robe of beauty
to inspire dreams,
deeds held together
by the weaver’s hand.
