Meteor

You are memorable,
a hero
an inspiration
set apart from others
not by your longevity
but by the intensity
of your mission.

Your life is defined
in a brief flashing journey
across a vast dark sky
inhabited by enduring,
countless heavenly bodies.

In that transient moment
people thrill
make a wish
exclaim
that they have seen you
that you have been an omen
bearing good fortune.

Amongst all those lights
fixed in their ageless places
only you
have carved your own path
only you
have brought a sudden shock
to make a difference.

Your light
strong and fleeting
illumines the lives of others,
provides an exclamation point
in the routine sentence
of existence,
bringing energy
of expectation
of possibility.

Entering the dense atmosphere
of our planet
for a moment
in your eternal journey
you have succeeded
in liberating your energy
from stone-cold matter
to enter the hearts
and imaginations
of earthbound ones.

In your sacrifice
you have made known
your spirit
breaking the monotonous
the confining
darkness of the night.
