Nameless
Beauty (Italian Sonnet)
I try to touch the skin of fire and the void
for comfort when others in desire blind
try to name the unknown in their pride,
thinking to possess the undefined.
In passion,
like the unsure adolescent,
suitors worship her face, her eyes, her hair,
thinking that their pet names are transcendent
yet knowing not her presence everywhere.
Rock, plant,
rambling stream and all that breathe
are her flesh and her limitless domain,
her pulse refreshes with abundant life,
to liberate
those willing to believe
that boundless beauty which no one can name
can heal the wounds of prejudice and strife.
