Outrage
This summer boils with the heat of political hysteria —
for eight long years patriots vacationed, oblivious,
while our leaders tortured, abolished rights, threw money
at a trumped-up war; denied science, killing safeguards
that protect our planet; despoiled air, water, wild animals
and lands for profit; put our nest eggs and well-being at risk.
This summer boils with the heat of political hysteria —
for the patriots have finally shaken their apathetic ways,
because the new government wants to guarantee
health care for all its citizens, because the new President
doesn’t look American enough, is too smart, and seeks
accord and friendship with other countries and faiths.
This summer boils with the heat of political hysteria —
for hatred suns itself unashamed by the pool of lies and rumors,
gathers the unsettled to settle old scores and to “deal”
with change in uncertain times; hunting enemies
of cherished myths, spurred on by powerful interests
patriots march madly to the edge armed with guns and slogans.
This summer boils with the heat of political hysteria —
for the fear of losing anemic social standing and precarious identity
has rallied the patriots in these listless, sweating dog days
of history, when real Americans’ values are just fine, thank you;
their politicians, God bless them, defend their right to call
the change seekers “Nazis” and disrupt town hall meetings.
